“我其實不是一個語言天才。”jerry坐下來說的第一句話就把我的想法給否決了。
jerry來加拿大才六年多，年少成長的一大段日子都在中國，接受的是典型的中國式敎育。所學的英語大部分只是死記硬背的單詞和應試技巧。到了這個陌生的國度，他自己講的英語別人聽不懂，而別人的話他也是一知半解，他感覺好像突然與外界有了隔閡。
儘管在出國前有著雄心壯志，jerry卻因為不能與人溝通，渾身縱有使不完的力氣也無濟於事。於是，他下定決心苦攻英語。“語言根本不是靠天賦的！”jerry又說，“學英語的.過程其實是一個自我挑戰的艱辛歷程。”
當初他並不知從何入手。為了練英語，他想方設法去找當地人聊天，試來試去結果是碰一鼻子灰。他總是先在腦子裡用中文想好要說的話，再找到相應的英文單詞，然後用所學的語法去套出要講的英文句子。如此下來，說出去的句子結結巴巴，常常他還沒說完，對方早把話搶了過去，語速飛快地又丟過來一大堆話。這樣的話他當然聽不明白，而“pardon”多了也不是辦法，結果對方早已失去了交談的興趣，而他自己也信心盡失。
但他不是輕易放棄的人。jerry想，不如試試退回來“閉門造車”練英語。自從有了這種“頓悟”，他開始把自己當作一個牙牙學語的孩子，完全用耳朵去感受純正的發音，去捕捉一個個單詞的開音合音、脣音齒音，去熟悉一個個句子的抑揚頓挫。
jerry說，在開始的大半年裡，他發痴似地尋找英語中每一個準確的發音部位，然後一遍遍地模仿。有時為了一個單詞的準確發音，要練上一千多遍。他說，這真是個很痛苦的過程。
